A new facility and/or equipment has the requirement to start working in good conditions which means; free of oxides, oil, sand, weld residues and other polluting agents that are generated during the construction. To accomplish that, it is required the study and execution of a chemical cleaning procedure.
After normal operation period, the process inherent contaminants attack some equipment and circuits of the installation, affecting the efficiency and therefore to the production cost. There is also a risk of a greater failure occurrence due to loss of the heat transfer, wears by corrosion and other phenomenon that affect the material.
Frequent chemical cleaning applications are developed in: boilers, heat exchangers, condensed steam lines, lubrication and hydraulic systems, cooling systems and process lines in general.
At the end of the construction of a new installation or equipment, deposits have to be removed, mainly: oils and grease, oxides, weld residues and sand. To dissolve and to remove such deposits, the pre-operational chemical cleaning becomes the preferred option. Selecting the correct chemical products, we can remove all deposits and leave de installation ready for Start-Up.
After a normal operation period, the installation accumulates deposits. Those deposits affect the efficiency and reliability of the equipments.
An example of this is the accumulation of salts in the inner side of the boiler. Some of it will be eliminated earlier in the water treatment program including on line chemical treatment and blown down purges.
Some salts stay there after the water is boiled up and they settle on the hottest parts, producing in some operating conditions an under deposit corrosion which promotes tubes failures.
Another example is the dirt that stuck in the inner side of the pipes. The kind of dirt is always different, because it depends on the type of fluid and heat flux of the pipe. That way we have the means to establish which kind of dirt it is and consequently we can determinate which chemical agents to use to extract de accumulation of it.
The most frequent problems in hydraulic and lubrication components are generated by the contamination of the fluid originated during the manufacture and assembly, fault of water tightness of the system, wearing of its elements or neglected manipulation in the process of loading the operation fluid.
A new installation requires that the parts, commonly pipes, built and mounted on site, reach a better cleaning level than the components they are going to unite, because these last ones are dispatched clean and protected from the factory.
During the operation, the fluid can acquire contamination, this time affecting the pipes as well as the components of the system, that’s why in the recovery of the cleaning level, both must be considered.
NCR has equipment to drag and to retain in filters solid particles contained in the pipes and to dehydrate the fluids, to reach the level of cleaning required in each occasion.
The service of flushing is applicable in pipes circuits where the diameters and lengths of it allows to reach turbulent flow and higher speeds to those of operation, using one or more positive displacement pumps.
The cleaning requirements expressed in codes like ISO 4406, NAS 1638 or other references, must be previously defined to the flushing procedure, in order to evaluate the time needed to satisfy the requirements. Normally the cleaning requirements are indicated by the manufacturers or owners of the equipment, or alternatively suggested by NCR.
